The known fossil record of knife fish dates back to the Upper Miocene period, approximately 25 million years ago. These rare fossils found in Bolivia confirm that this species is of neotropical origin. Recent research shows that these unusual creatures are more closely related to catfish than to characoids.

One of the most striking features of knifefish is their ability to generate electricity. These creatures, also called electric snakes, use this feature to find their prey and determine their direction.
