Moray Eel Characteristics

Moray Eels can have an average length of 80 cm to 1.2 meters, but in rare cases they have been observed to reach 1.5 meters. Their weight usually ranges from 2 to 5 kilograms, although some larger individuals can weigh even more.

This species can live for approximately 10-20 years in its natural environment. However, environmental conditions and nutritional habits are determining factors on lifespan.

The Mediterranean eel has a carnivorous diet and its diet usually includes fish, octopuses, crabs and other small sea creatures. This predator is adept at ambushing its prey and often hides in caves or among rocks, waiting for its prey.

Breeding periods generally coincide with the hot summer months. Female Moray Eels can lay between 60 and 300 eggs at a time. The eggs hatch in approximately 3 weeks and the larvae drift away leading a planktonic life, during which time they grow and mature.

Moray Eels generally live in rocky and coral areas between 1 and 50 meters depth. However, they can also be seen at depths of up to 80 meters

Moray Eel is listed as "Data Deficient" on the IUCN Red List. It is classified as. This means there is not enough data on the species' population trends and threat status. However, factors such as coastal development, pollution and overfishing can endanger their habitat.
