This species belongs to the Sea Bass family and its diet generally consists of small fish, crab species and mussels. The dark brown bands running down its back become more prominent towards the tail stalk and may vary depending on the season.


The Painted Comber fish belongs to the genus Serranus and can be found in all seas. The fin formula is D X-XI 14-15, A III 7-8, P 14-16. A distinctive whitish spot on the side of the body towards the anal fin and a red-orange caudal fin attract attention. Its scales are small and there are 65-75 scales on the lateral line.


The breeding periods coincide with June in the Black Sea, May-June in the Marmara Sea, April-August in the Aegean Sea, and May-August in the Mediterranean. The age at which they reach sexual maturity is 12 cm long and 3 years old. During breeding periods, Painted Comber can lay between 18,000 and 900,000 eggs, depending on the breed and species.
