What Should We Do When a Fish Hits the Hook?

What happens when the fish first hits the hook is not valid for everyone. This information depends on the person's experience, the hunting place, the place to hunt depends on the type of fish, the way the bait, rod and reel are used and hunting technique may vary depending on the season.

Let's explain with examples:

Trout with a hard jaw structure in current but not very deep water, Broadcast or if we are hunting cranes:

Hold the fishing rod parallel to the water and do not lift it until the fish gets tired. Holding the rod upright in the air may cause the fish close to the surface to jump off the rod or cause the line to tighten. When the fish approaches, you can take control by lifting the rod up.

Carp, whose jaw structure is not very hard, in calm and deep water in the sea, lake or stream, Mullet , If we are hunting fish such as rudd:

Without lifting the rod too high, pull the hook up and against the direction of the fish at a speed that will fit the hook into the fish's mouth. This is called leashing. If you do this movement too quickly, the needle may escape from the fish's mouth and cause a hunting accident.

In relatively deep water with a slow current fake bait:

Lift the fishing rod upwards and insert the hook into the fish's mouth. Many of the fish that attack the fake bait may panic and move in a different direction. Since we cannot determine the direction the fish will go in panic, it is necessary to take up the slack by lifting the fishing rod up and ensuring that the hook fits into the fish's mouth. Sometimes it may be necessary to tire the fish by keeping the rod parallel to the water in case moving fish jump on the water.

Some fish prefer to throw themselves at the first hit instead of running left and right. In such a case, it is best to adjust the drag after lifting the fishing rod.

If we are fishing with surface fake bait:

When using a surface fake bait, the fishing rod is held up so that the bait moves properly and stays above the water. When a fish hits, the reel needs to be wound up a bit due to the line gap and time is wasted.

In such cases, as soon as you feel that the fish has taken the fake bait into its mouth, pull the fishing line parallel to the water, opposite the direction of the fish, and set the hooks. If you do not do this, the bait may come out before the needle is set and come back as if it was thrown with a slingshot.

The important thing here is to attach the hook to the fish. You should pay close attention to the line gap when tiring the fish.

If we are fishing with fake bait coming from the bottom in the sea:

Again, we need to pull the fishing rod vertically upwards. Because we do not know the direction of the fish and the line gap is a disadvantage for us.

As you can see, what we do when the fish first hits the hook changes depending on many criteria. You may be confused when you read the article. However, since the goal is not to miss the fish, trust your instincts.
